The Story Behind Friends of Hippos

Eight years ago, during a season of healing after hip replacement surgery and caring for my 80 -year-old mother, I found myself reaching for something steady and joyful . Painting became that place.

Around that same time, a tiny spark of happiness arrived in the world: Fiona, the beloved baby hippo born in Cincinnati. She captured hearts everywhere, including mine, and inspired the name Friends of Hippos.

What began as a personal creative refuge slowly grew into something I could share. I started showing my whimsical watercolor animals at local art festivals and in nearby shops, and along the way, something wonderful happened...people smiled.
